Welcome to the technology portal page of the H. Leslie Perry Memorial Library Website.
What kind of technology you ask? Well isn’t that a good question. Technology covers
a lot of real estate and means various things to different people and industries.
We could easily spend months detailing the sea of disciplines that are part of what
people call “Technology Today.”
Not to worry, we will not be here that long. However, no discussion about technology
is complete without a definition of the particular area of technology that will be
covered.
In fact the area of technology is so far reaching and expansive that even the definition
in Wikipedia takes several pages. Since we subscribe to the school of less is more,
especially when less means being clearer and and more precise, let’s try this as
a definition for the level of technology that will be covered in our Perry Library
Website in the next several pages
technology
1. The use of scientific knowledge to solve practical problems, especially in industry
and commerce.
2. The specific methods, materials, and devices used to solve practical problems. The
American Heritage® Science Dictionary
Here is a second group of definitions that really kind of nails it:
technology
1. the methods and tools that a society has developed in order to facilitate the
solution of its practical problems.
2. any specific application of such. From Ologies & -Isms.
There you have it. Technology simply put, is the process of society developing methods,
materials and devices to solve the practical problems that it faces on a day to day
basis. Kinda cool huh!
In conclusion this is what computers, Google, Facebook, twitter, cell phones, I Pads,
kindles and a host of other emerging technologies all have in common. They solve
problems. So stay with us while we have fun with these topics in the following pages.
As the use of social networking sites continues to grow, especially among teenagers
and young adults.
There are security risks involved, so you should take certain precautions. Do not
give sensitive information to anyone unless you are sure that they are indeed who
they claim to be and that they should have access to the information.
You may be required to provide some basic information, but you have control of anything
beyond what is required to register for an account on that social site.
Pictures, current street addresses, and other personal information should not be
compromising or too detailed.
When it does all your personal documents, letters, pictures, music, video, etc. is
lost and in many situations cannot be recovered or costs a lot of money to be recovered.
Make sure you have backups of all your important data so it is not lost when the
computer fails.
